Butterfly larvae, or caterpillars, consume plant leaves
and spend practically all of their time in search of food.
In the chrysalis stage, the caterpillar sheds its skin leaving itself encased in an articulated green exoskeleton. The exoskeleton becomes transparent before it ecloses (emerges), and its adult colors finally can be seen.
The monarch expands and retracts its wings, and it then flies to feed on a variety of nectar plants.
